“The Philippine Embassy in Doha has learned that multiple Filipinos were apprehended and held earlier today, on March 28, 2025, due to their alleged involvement in unapproved political protests in Qatar,” stated the embassy.

Earlier, the embassy “firmly recommended” Filipinos to adhere to Qatar’s local laws concerning large gatherings and protests within the nation.

“The Embassy remains in contact with local officials to provide essential consular support to these individuals,” it stated.

The Department of Foreign Affairs did not offer specifics.

The detention occurred as OFWs organized concurrent demonstrations to commemorate the 80th birthday of ex-President Rodrigo Duterte, who faces an order for his arrest from the International Criminal Court due to suspected crimes against humanity linked to his government’s anti-drug operations.

Groups representing overseas Filipino workers who back Duterte have initiated a “week without remittances” to demonstrate their backing of Duterte.

At least 6,000 people have died in the drug war, as per official government records.

Nonetheless, human rights organizations and the ICC prosecutor assessed that the number of deaths ranged from 12,000 to 30,000 during the period from 2016 to 2019, with numerous cases reported as extrajudicial executions.

Duterte was taken into custody at Ninoy Aquino International Airport on March 11 and held at Villamor Air Base on the same day.

His preliminary hearing was held on March 14. The verification of charges is set for September 23, and he could file for temporary release prior to that date.
