As part of an important initiative to boost Nigeria’s digital economy, Egbin Power, which leads in power generation within the country, has been recognized by the Federal Government as the prime site for establishing Nigeria’s inaugural National Data Park and Compute Infrastructure.

Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Minister for Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, revealed this information when visiting the power plant. He was greeted at the site by the Group Managing Director of Sahara Power Group, Dr. Kola Adesina (MFR), as well as the CEO of Egbin Power, Mokhtar Bounour, and several others.

The pioneering program initiated by the Federal Government seeks to leverage dependable energy sources and advanced technologies to propel Nigeria’s digital economy ahead.

The partnership between Egbin Power and the Federal Government highlights a common objective to boost the country’s technological skills and promote advancement within the digital industry.

The minister received an introduction to the plant and subsequently toured the premises alongside the management team.

In the course of the conversation, the minister conveyed his assurance that Egbin Power provides an appropriate setting for hosting the Data Park. This would allow GenCo to take up a significant position in driving Nigeria’s digital economy.

He said, “The growth we aspire to achieve cannot be attained without a robust digital economy. All necessary components to drive the digital economy are present at Egbin Power—including not just energy and water resources, but also the exceptional expertise of our workforce. This combination is essential for propelling the digital economy forward.”

The minister pointed out the worldwide progress in artificial intelligence, stressing that Africa needs to keep pace with this trend.

He highlighted the significance of developing creative approaches to engage with this digital trend. Additionally, he pointed out that Nigeria’s digital sector plays a crucial role in boosting the country’s GDP, underlining that having a robust data center is essential for leveraging the potential of AI and data handling.

Dr. Adesina commented on the strategic partnership stating: “The connection between the digital economy and energy supply is significant. Consistent access to electricity improves the performance of the digital sector, including aspects like IoT, AI, data usage, among others.”

He showed dedication to backing the creation of a National Data Park, along with a computing center and additional IT infrastructures needed for the digital economy.

He emphasized Egbin Power’s dependable power supply, the availability of expandable land, and the favorable conditions for deploying this kind of digital infrastructure.

“We are committed to supporting the development of the Data Park or any necessary IT infrastructure for the digital economy,” he stated. “We possess stable energy supply, suitable land, and an appropriate setting.” Adesina also mentioned that substantial investments and advanced technologies have been introduced post-takeover to rejuvenate the facility. Additionally, expansion strategies are being planned to increase its output twofold.

Mokhtar Bounour, the CEO of Egbin Power, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to reliable electricity production for the national grid despite the obstacles present within the power industry.

“We are open to collaborations that will drive Nigeria’s growth and success. We will continue to push boundaries to deliver reliable power to the nation, facilitating socio-economic progress and ensuring our communities and stakeholders thrive,” Bounour stated.

During his visit, the minister also explored the Bright Gyimah Innovation Centre, which is housed inside Powerfield Schools—a school system managed by Egbin Power. This center acts as an educational hub where students can develop competencies in areas such as Information Technology (IT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Additionally, it offers opportunities for them to express themselves creatively through various mediums including art, music, and both culinary and hospitality disciplines.
