FDI Surges to $607 Million in First 7 Months of 2025

Sri Lanka, August 27 – According to BOI Chairperson Arjuna Herath, the volume of foreign direct investment the nation attracted during the initial seven months of this year has nearly doubled when contrasted with the same period in the previous year.

As a result, the nation has attracted $607 million in foreign direct investment over the first seven months of this year, he mentioned.

Last year, the nation attracted $614 million in foreign direct investment, and with the present rate of growth, it is anticipated that the country will secure $1 billion in such investments by the conclusion of this year, according to Herath. He mentioned that the figure for foreign direct investment received last year surpassed official records yesterday (the 25th). Additionally, he noted that as of the end of July last year, the Board of Investment had authorized 63 projects, comprising 34 new ventures and 29 additional developments of ongoing initiatives. Herath also pointed out that the total worth of these approved projects amounts to $776 million, including $500 million from foreign direct investment and the rest, $276 million, coming from domestic sources.

He further mentioned that this year, the BOI has generated 956 new employment opportunities via these initiatives, with the participating firms exporting $456 million during the initial seven months of the year.

Herath added that the BOI aims to set up seven new investment areas within the nation, with two of them expected to be established this year.

He mentioned that the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka aims to set up the remaining five investment areas this year or at minimum by the beginning of the following year.

Herath mentioned that digitalization holds a significant role in the evolution path of Sri Lanka’s BOI. As such, the BOI Gateway Website – known as the Online Investment Approval System – serves as a key effort in transforming the Board of Investment into a digital entity. This centralized digital platform was introduced on Monday (25th), marking the completion of a fully digital and open investment procedure.
