It was an exuberant and spiritually uplifting event as notable Nigerians, relatives, and dedicated admirers of music icon Evangelist Ebenezer Obey-Fabiyi came together to celebrate him at a sincere thanksgiving service commemorating his 83rd birthday.

The combined celebration, themed “Honoring God’s Fidelity on My 83rd Birthday and 68 Years as a Renowned Global Artist,” served not just as a joyous occasion but also as a spiritual reflection.

The occasion motivated everyone in attendance—including Christians, Nigerians, and the broader community—regarding the lasting principles of penitence, virtuous conduct, and dedicated service to God.

The ambiance at Decross Gospel Mission in Mulero, Iyana Ipaja, Lagos, crackled with energy as musical and spiritual tributes flowed in abundantly.

Pastor Joseph Adelakun (Baba Ayewa), Esther Igbekele, Bidemi Olaoba, along with the Plain and Pleasure Band and the Decross Church Choir, managed to uplift everyone present. They infused the occasion with such emotion during their acts of worship and thankfulness that both the honoree and those attending were profoundly moved, resulting in a memorable day filled with appreciation and adoration.

The event served as a testament to Evangelist Obey-Fabiyi’s influential path—not only as an acclaimed artist, but also as an instrument of God’s grace and steadfastness throughout the years.

The president and founder of Word Assembly Ministries in Ilorin, Kwara State, Evangelist Isaac Omolehin—who served as the guest preacher—highlighted the significance of staying away from sinful and ungodly practices while maintaining an active lifestyle. He further stated, “Detaching yourself from these behaviors becomes simpler when you remain engaged.”

“There will be a moment when you won’t get another chance to commit sins. It’s wiser to avoid sinful acts now so as to secure paradise. Regardless of how much you may resist, sin will inevitably lead to ruin—no matter who you are or how wealthy you might be; material possessions can’t protect you. Surrender your life to Christ and pledge to serve him starting today, for eventually even your donations and contributions will lose their significance,” he concluded.

He encouraged everybody to lead their lives for Christ, stressing that existence without Him is futile.

Omolehin highlighted that the musical icon has received remarkable divine favor, enabling him to reside in Nigeria for 83 years.

He has dedicated a significant portion of his life to living in Lagos, which had roughly 250,000 inhabitants back in 1942. Nowadays, this figure has surged past 20 million, even though the landscape hasn’t changed much. Amidst intense overcrowding, health risks, and daily hardships, he has flourished magnificently for an impressive 83 years.

How many of his fellow musicians from Nigeria are still living? Baba Obey stands out as a remarkable figure in the country, with every aspect of him being graceful and lovely. He embodies for me what it means to live for Christ.

“He has devoted his entire life to worshipping God, which stands as the highest priority for every man, since there will come a moment when the longing to serve God will be the only thing of real significance,” he further stated.

Former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo paid heartfelt homage to Ebenezer Obey, calling him an extraordinary individual whose whole life and musical career were devoted to serving God.

“You have all the reasons to be grateful to God. Despite facing numerous challenges in life, you’ve stayed strong through His grace. The thing I value most about you is your complete dedication—how you’ve even committed your music career—to serving Him with all your heart,” he said additionally.

One of the standout moments at the event occurred when the guest of honor stressed that the festivities ought to incorporate a prayer for the country’s well-being. The segment was conducted by the Bishop of Remo and Archbishop of the Ecclesiastical Province of Lagos, Most Reverend (Dr) Michael Fape.

He led the congregation in intense prayers for Nigeria’s peace, unity, and advancement, simultaneously condemning all elements that hinder the country’s development and stability.

Archiepiscopus Ioannes Osai-Onyeki guided fellow clergy members during the ceremony to intercede for the honoree, their kin, the congregation, as well as everyone who played a part in making the festivities successful.

The renowned musician Fuji, also known as Wasiu Ayinde or K1, added depth to the occasion through an emotional homage and musical display. He praised Ebenezer Obey as an exceptional mentor and referred to him as both the grandfather—and even further back, the great-great-grandfather—of Nigerian music.

I feel honored to be a part of your enduring legacy within the music world. Since the loss of my mentor, Sikiru Ayinde Barrister, you’ve proven to be an outstanding father and grandfather. His departure did create a gap, but your ongoing guidance and paternal care have filled this void seamlessly. I genuinely thank you and hope for many more years of robust health and vitality for you.

“You have devoted your entire existence and musical talents to serving God, inspiring numerous individuals like ourselves to grow nearer to Him and dedicate everything we possess to His service. We hold dear your outstanding life and steadfast commitment to God,” he further stated.

During his speech, the honored guest conveyed his thankfulness to God for the blessing of life and excellent health at the age of 83.

He stated, “My only task now is to keep thanking God throughout my lifetime, particularly for using me as an instrument of honor. I express my gratitude to all those who have accompanied me in offering our thanks to God for this extraordinary event. I feel deeply appreciative, and I earnestly hope that both God and others will acknowledge their efforts in response.”

Several notable attendees at the event included the Osile of Oke Ona Egbaland, Oba Adedapo Adewale Tejuoso, along with his spouses; Senator Grace Bent; Senator Lekan Mustapha; the ex-Secretary to the Ogun State Government, Taiwo Adeoluwa; Prophet Julius Kumoluyi, and the seasoned gospel artist Funmi Aragbaye.
