Law enforcement officers detained Luang Phor Alongkot, the previous head monk of a famous AIDS care temple, early Tuesday morning due to several allegations such as misappropriation of funds and financial fraud.

Major General Withaya Sriprasertparp, head of the Crime Suppression Division (CSD), stated that officers detained Luang Phor Alongkot at Wat Phrabatnampu in Lop Buri Province near midnight when investigators observed him departing the temple, potentially intending to flee.

Law enforcement officials escorted the ex-abbot to the Criminal Court Division in Bangkok for questioning.

Sixty-five-year-old Luang Phor Alongkot faces an arrest order from the Central Criminal Court handling corruption and misconduct cases, which was released last Friday. He has been accused of misappropriating temple funds, misuse of authority, and engaging in money laundering activities. The accusation of abuse of power stems from the fact that monks are regarded as public officials under the law.

Authorities stated that they conducted an inspection of the temple and confiscated financial records, such as contributions and expenditures starting from 2019. Officials from the state audit department participated in the investigation, and property ownership certificates were also taken from the temple.

Officers also detained influencer Seksan “Mor Bee” Sapsubbsakul, 43, who helped with fundraising for the temple. The police escorted Mr. Seksan, a self-described spiritual healer, to significant sites to gather and retrieve evidence to aid in the legal proceedings against him.

The detention took place when law enforcement conducted raids at 17 sites in Bangkok and Lop Buri early Tuesday.

The detentions came after doubts emerged regarding Luang Phor Alongkot’s actual identity and academic history, the allocation of funds collected by the AIDS hospice monastery over the last thirty years, the utilization of a deceased individual’s identification number to establish a banking account for receiving contributions, and the care provided to individuals with HIV/AIDS within the temple.

Major General Pol Jaroonkiat Pankaew, vice commissioner of the Central Investigation Bureau, stated following an interrogation with Luang Phor Alongkot on Tuesday that the former abbott has now officially renounced his monastic status.

He mentioned that the previous abbot informed the authorities that their monastery had gotten ten-digit contributions. This amount exceeded what the temple needed, so it was utilized to purchase property, build soccer pitches, and fund business investments.

The CSD chief Colonel Major General Withaya stated that they would also bring charges against ‘Mor Bee’ for reportedly misusing approximately 300 million baht from a temple account, and would seek out any collaborators involved.
