The Minister of Education, Olatunji Alausa, has suggested extending the compulsory National Youth Service Corp program from twelve months to twenty-four months.

Alausa similarly urged for an increase in the scope of the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development Training Program for volunteers.

During a courtesy visit to the Director-General of NYSC, Brgd. Gen. Olakunle Nafiu, he placed the call on Friday, as stated in a post on the official Facebook page of the NYSC.

The message stated, “In addition, the minister promoted extending the national service duration from one to two years, alongside broadening the scope of the NYSC Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development Training program for those serving.”

Alausa called for an increase in the number of graduate teachers assigned to rural schools, noting that this step could alleviate the staffing shortfall.

The minister additionally addressed the matter of resolving issues for OND part-time graduates holding full-time HND degrees, who were formerly exempt from national service.

“You have performed exceptionally well as an organization. The NYSC should provide individuals with greater opportunities to become job creators who can address the nation’s requirements,” he stated.

Nafiu proposed establishing a database for Nigerian students studying overseas at the university level, emphasizing that this would help the government and educational authorities identify individuals with fraudulent degrees.

“NYSC is prepared to adhere to the policy guidelines instructed by the Federal Government. Additionally, we are working towards restructuring the scheme to align with current national requirements,” he said.
