The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) convened to reinforce their current collaboration, focusing notably on advancing the Africa Trade Competitiveness initiative and other related efforts.

The disclosure came during a courtesy call made by a UNIDO delegation, headed by their Director General, Mr. Gerd MÜLLER, to the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray. This meeting took place at the ECOWAS headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria, on Wednesday.

The discussion centered around enhancing the current collaboration between ECOWAS and UNIDO, with particular emphasis on implementing the Africa Trade Competitiveness and Market Access Program (ATCMA) – Regional Component (WACOMP II). This initiative seeks to boost sustainable trading activities within Africa as well as with the European Union.

The president of the ECOWAS Commission and the director of UNIDO discussed strategies to tackle issues concerning market accessibility and reducing trade obstacles, ensuring product quality meets required standards, boosting value addition and diversity, streamlining mechanisms for revising supply chains, and improving capabilities and prospects for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in terms of commerce and exports.
