The conflict in Congo

The eastern Congo
conflict’s complexity
Rooted in the repercussions of the 1994 Rwandan genocide and the struggle over mineral resources, this issue is adding complexity to the mediation attempts.

The Democratic Republic of Congo possesses extensive deposits of lithium and cobalt along with various other minerals, particularly in the eastern part. This has resulted in multiple uprisings and conflicts centered around controlling these resource-rich areas.

The M23 rebellion, led by ethnic Tutsis, came into existence in 2012 and continues to be among the strongest insurgent organizations active in the area.

Rwanda has faced accusations of supporting M23, but it has refuted these claims.

The instability in Congo has likewise spilled into neighboring areas, as both Uganda and Burundi have deployed their forces within the nation.
