The Delta State government has addressed a widely circulated video featuring several nursing students amid the two-day stay of the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu. They clarified that the incident captured at the Event Centre in Asaba on Tuesday did not accurately depict the full circumstances.

Mr. Charles Aniagwu, who serves as the Commissioner for Rural Road Works and Public Information, stated that although some dissatisfaction existed among the nursing staff, there had been no instances of aggression or harassment during his visit. Initially, he noted, the nurses greeted him warmly, appeared joyful, and celebrated with dance and cheers when the First Lady spoke. However, a small group humorously conveyed their sentiments by altering the lyrics to a song in reaction to the circumstances.

At a press briefing held in Asaba on Thursday, Aniagwu said that the response from certain students had been misconstrued and inaccurately portrayed on social media platforms by people aiming to align the incident with their personal agendas.

He stated, “Senator Oluremi Tinubu, our esteemed First Lady, spent two productive days with us. This wasn’t a vacation; rather, she came on an official trip where significant progress was made. Our community received considerable support, which we greatly appreciate. We wish to express our heartfelt thanks to her for showing us kindness from such a lofty position.”

She introduced multiple medical kits along with an array of additional supplies to aid our young individuals in their path towards achieving success and brilliance. On the inaugural day, more than 10,000 medical kits were disseminated throughout the six South-South regions, with our state serving as the central hub.

We were honored to have several First Ladies from various regions present at the event. They expressed their support for the admirable work done by our own First Lady. She felt welcome, and we ensured she had an enjoyable stay during her visit. We are extremely satisfied with the outcomes of her trip to our state.

In response to the circulating video, Aniagwu firmly asserted that the First Lady did not go to the School of Nursing in Agbor. He mentioned that the nurses who attended the event anticipated receiving medical supplies but were informed differently. During her speech, the First Lady apologized to them, explaining that this round of contributions was aimed exclusively at supporting midwives.

She told the nursing staff that they would get their chance eventually under the Renewed Hope Initiative. Nevertheless, several nurses, anticipating similar treatment to that received by midwives, felt let down. Nonetheless, no signs of aggression or harassment occurred during her visit. Initially, the nurses were delighted; they danced and cheered as she addressed them. Yet, a handful conveyed their sentiments lightheartedly by altering the lyrics in reaction.

This reaction was misconstrued by particular persons on social media, leading to a misrepresentation of the events according to their personal agendas. Consequently, the widely shared video fails to truthfully capture the ambiance or the actual occurrences during the event.

As a government, we deeply appreciate the First Lady’s visit and her efforts. It should be noted that the reactions captured in the video do not reflect the behavior typical of our nursing staff but instead come from a small group who were seeking parity with midwives.

He expressed the state government’s appreciation for the First Lady’s backing and dismissed the false stories being shared online.

“We aimed to clear up the misunderstanding. We once more extend our appreciation to the President, his spouse, and all supporting Nigerians, reaffirming our dedication to excellent governance inDelta via the MORE Agenda.”

Aniagwu further emphasized Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s dedication to collaborating with the federal government to foster the state’s progress. He mentioned that engagement with various governmental entities across multiple tiers would be intensified to propel the MORE Agenda forward.

He stated: “We will continue to strengthen our relationship with federal agencies, starting from the Presidency down to other government institutions, to ensure that our state benefits maximally from available opportunities. At the end of the day, this will help us improve the quality of life for our people.

“Our state has already begun reaping the benefits of this relationship. Just on Sunday, we joined the Federal Government in the concessioning of the Benin–Onitsha Expressway with dual carriage, which will ease transportation along that corridor.

“We fully support this initiative of the Federal Government, and as a government, we wholeheartedly welcome this effort to make the road more motorable over time.

On Monday, we additionally saw Minister of Works, Engr David Umahi, along with our governor—who stood in for the President—further strengthening the amicable relations we uphold with the Federal Government.

We have repeatedly stated that currently we only recognize one president, and we remain committed to working with him to keep the nation functioning smoothly. Any unrest at the federal level or within individual states could obstruct progress, something neither the country nor the state can afford.

This partnership has already guaranteed that the Federal Government is moving forward with the development of the 17.5 km route connecting the Second Niger Bridge to Issele-Azagba.

As a state, we embrace this with great enthusiasm. The governor, who represented the President at the event, has assured that Delta State will collaborate and provide assistance for all initiatives undertaken by the Federal Government to guarantee the project’s successful conclusion.

At that event, Minister of Works Engr David Umahi recognized our governor’s outstanding leadership in providing the benefits of democracy via investments in infrastructure and human capital.

Governor Oborevwori has genuinely personified Section 14, Subsection 2, Paragraph B of the 1999 Constitution, emphasizing that ensuring the safety and well-being of citizens should be the main objective of governance.

“In that moment, we witnessed a convergence of fairness in this assessment, and we appreciate the Minister and Mr President for their efforts in our state. We also look forward to more such projects in the future.”
