was instructed to demolish his garden shed following complaints from neighbors about the “intrusive” structure.

A 79-year-old individual lodged a retroactive planning request with the Camden Council after construction on the project began in April of this year.

He was firm about the new structure at his residence in Hampstead, northern part
London
– which took place instead of a summer house and an old shed – was described as being of “limited dimensions” and “conventional building style”.

However, residents stated that the structure was “considerably more visually and structurally noticeable compared to what had been initially permitted or previously present.”

Mr. Gilmour has recently been informed that he needs to relocate the structure, which stands 2.5 meters tall, 1.9 meters wide, and 2.9 meters deep, by an additional 2.5 meters.

It followed the artist being compelled to revise his anniversary schedule due to a series of grievances.

He has received a one-month deadline to demolish the building and reconstruct it 2.5 meters away from the back edge of the garden.

The Hampstead Hill Gardens Residents’ Association stated that matters should not have reached this point, as the shed was supposed to be constructed on earlier approved structures outlined in the 2023 planning approval.

Chairman Audrey Mandela urged for the structure to be completely taken down.

She said: ‘

The proposal must be denied because the current setup is disruptive, imposing, and considerably more visible and tangible compared to what was initially authorized or previously existed.

We hope the council will decide to remove it at the earliest opportunity to prevent further damage to the local area.

We are worried that this seems like an intentional misrepresentation. It looks as though this isn’t just a small or technical mistake, but rather a purposeful realignment of the structure that wouldn’t have been approved.

The Whiteacre Planning team, representing Mr. Gilmour, stated in their submission that “it is crucial the proposed development does not negatively affect nearby amenities, including issues like overwatching, reduction in privacy, or shading.”

Although this, some residents have criticized Mr. Gilmour for being “uncivil.”

After submitting the retroactive application, one neighbor raised concerns that the new shed violated the back fence line and thus couldn’t be hidden behind plants, unlike the previous building.

Another suggested the structure should be modified to create a two-meter clearance behind the shed — in order to “allow room for gardening and nature.”

Objector Alex Shinder stated, “There was no discussion, and the move is considerate.”

The Whitacre Planning authority dismissed the idea that the shed would have any negative effect on nearby amenities.

It mentioned: “Even though the top of the shed’s roof exceeds the level of the boundary fence, it won’t result in any viewing from outside, reduction in privacy, or shading.”

The letter stated that Mr Gilmour’s request should be “approved immediately” — because it “meets all applicable local and national planning regulations.”

This isn’t the first instance where one of the guitarist’s sheds has sparked debate.

In 2011, Mr. Gilmour was instructed to demolish a beach cabin at his £3 million seaside property designated as a heritage site or risk legal action.

A local authority informed the rock star that the yellow shed where he stored his bikes was considered unsightly within the protected zone in Hove, East Sussex, and needed to be removed.

Sir Gilmour once sold his home located in Maida Vale, London, to Lord Spencer—and contributed the £3.6 million gained from the sale to Crisis, an organization supporting people without homes.

The musician and composer was part of Pink Floyd since 1967, when the group later emerged as one of the best-selling and highly regarded bands in the music industry during the early 1980s.

Mr. Gilmour has additionally launched five independent records.
