Sri Lanka, August 27 – In line with the government’s efforts to position Sri Lanka as a key maritime center in the region, enhancements are underway for fueling operations at the Colombo Port. The Petroleum Corporation and the Petroleum Bulk Terminal Company are collaborating to upgrade the pipelines and infrastructure necessary for bunkering activities at the Colombo Port.

A newly constructed pipeline network has been introduced to overcome challenges in oil trading caused by insufficient pipeline infrastructure and oil supply facilities needed for bunkering at Colombo Port. As part of the initial stage, the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) supplied ship fuel for the first time via a local private firm involved in maritime fuel trade on Friday (22), utilizing the new pipeline system and oil handling facility set up by the Petroleum Bulk Terminal Company at the Colombo Port South Terminal.

Speaking at the event, Minister of Energy Kumara Jayakody stated that this project marks one of the actions undertaken to boost the maritime fuel trade and represents an important milestone in the government’s plan to position Sri Lanka as a naval center in the area. “Previously, the delivery of ship fuel to Colombo Port occurred solely via the Dolphin Jetty. Nevertheless, because fuel was also being offloaded at that location, the provision of marine fuel became interrupted. This posed a significant challenge for the bunker trading sector. We recognized this issue and enhanced infrastructure by building an additional pipeline to deliver ship fuel through the South Jetty of the port. As a result, today marks the first time that fuel has been transported through the South Terminal,” he mentioned.

The gathering included Deputy Minister for Ports and Aviation Janitha Ruwan Kodithuwakku, Chairperson of the CPC and Petroleum Storage Terminal Janaka Rajakaruna, Managing Director Dr. Mayura Netthikumara, along with various other authorities.
