Hilary Benn has supported Labour’s proposals to boost UK defense expenditures even as welfare benefits face reductions.

The NI Secretary of State stated that “it was appropriate and correct” to boost defense expenditure, as he felt that the primary duty of a government is “to safeguard the country.”

The
Chancellor Rachel Reeves utilized her Spring Statement on Wednesday.
to verify an extra ยฃ2.2 billion for the Ministry of Defence in the upcoming fiscal year.

Benn stated that the present welfare system is “not sustainable and fails to assist individuals capable of returning to employment.”

During Wednesday’s Spring Statement, Reeves revealed additional benefit reductions as she strives to adhere to her own borrowing regulations.

Current recipients of the health portion of Universal Credit will have their allowance fixed at ยฃ97 per week until the period ending in 2029-30.

According to the governmentโ€™s own evaluation, the combined effect of the welfare reform might result in an additional 250,000 individuals falling into poverty in the UK by 2030, with 50,000 of them being children.

Benn said that assessment did not take into account how new government measures around returning to work may impact income positions.

When comparing the United Kingdom to other nations, the rise in welfare payments and disability benefits stands out as disproportionate compared to similar countries.

“One out of every eight young individuals in our country is neither in education nor employed nor receiving training; this represents the untapped potential of the nation. We cannot simply ignore this issue by shrugging our shoulders. We must take action,” he emphasized.

First Minister Michelle O’Neill referred to the Spring Statement as
“macho agenda”
At a moment when the public sector is “in dire straits” and requires urgent funding for the healthcare system.

She also stated, ‘This is when our administration needs to strongly combat this push towards militarization.’

This is not beneficial for the people around here.

Emma Little-Pengelly, the Deputy First Minister, stated that the chancellor should alter his approach and contended that Reeves was imposing burdens on those least capable of bearing them.

Little-Pengelly stated that defense expenditure was essential, yet she felt the chancellor had multiple political options and her choices stemmed from inadequate economic expansion.
