BBC
Radio 1 icon DJ Andy Peebles passed away at the age of 76, sparking a flood of tributes for the renowned broadcaster.

fellow radio host Mike Read broke the news on air this morning, expressing that he was ‘heartbroken’ over the loss of his ‘mate.’

Mr Read said: “I’m deeply saddened by the news regarding our friend Andy Peebles. He was just about to come onboard at Heritage. We started at Radio One around the same time. I knew all about his musical expertise.”

‘lift your bat and take an extended break in the pavilion. we had lunch not too long ago with dlt and adrian juste. fantastic knock.’

At the same time, friend and radio executive John Simons commented: “Itโ€™s so sad to learn about Andy Peeblesโ€™ departure. I will cherish the lengthy discussions we had on football and soul music; he possessed much deeper knowledge than me in these areas. Heaven will experience a Quiet Storm this evening. Farewell, Andy.”

Fans have subsequently turned to social media platforms to express their sympathies as well.

One remarked: “Farewell then, Andy Peebles. From Piccadilly Radio and BBC Radio 1. Those times when major radio stations understood their listeners.”

Another update: ‘I’ve just learned about the unfortunate demise of ex-Radio 1 DJ Andy Peebles. Notably, he conducted the final interview with someone.’

Hours before being gunned down in New York, he was also a huge fan of soul music! Rest in Peace, Andy!

In 1978, Andy Peebles became part of BBC Radio 1โ€™s team, hosting their weekday evening slot from 8 PM to 10 PM on Mondays through Thursdays.

Previously, he began his radio journey in 1973 with BBC Radio Manchester. Later, he went on to establish the independent radio station Piccadilly Radio in Manchester.

The television personality would subsequently take part in hosting 15 installments of Top of the Pops.

The renowned DJ’s career milestones feature an interview with Beatles icon John Lennon and Yoko Ono, broadcasted on BBC Radio 1 in 1980โ€”just two days prior to the Liverpool nativeโ€™s assassination at his Manhattan homeโ€™s entrance.

In a 2020 interview with CBS, Mr Peebles reflected: “Never have I experienced such nerves before; growing up, I didnโ€™t just admire him but also his entire group and all their achievements… It appeared as though he had control over every detail. They looked incredibly content.”
