The Bayelsa State Internal Revenue Service has reported an unprecedented rise in the state’s internally generated revenue, reaching N4.2 billion in one month—a remarkable 320 percent jump compared to earlier numbers.

The announcement made by BIRS on Saturday revealed that the progress achieved can be credited to the implementation of an electronic ticketing (e-ticketing) system. This innovation has successfully eradicated cash leaks, reduced corruption, and enhanced transparency in tax collection processes.

BIRS chairman, Daniel Eniekezimene,

indicated that the administration implemented a completely computerized tax collection process, guaranteeing that all contributions from transportation companies, merchants, and enterprises are channeled directly into the public treasury.

In contrast to the traditional manual system, the e-ticketing platform provides immediate receipts, which makes transactions easily trackable and minimizes chances of extortion.

“This marks a pivotal moment for Bayelsa. We’ve stopped revenue leaks and made sure that each kobol finds its way directly into government coffers,” said Eniekezimene.

Isaac Tamuno, a commercial tricycle driver, expressed that the change felt like a relief.

He said, “Previously, we were unaware of where our funds were being directed. However, with the introduction of the e-ticket, we receive immediate receipts, preventing anyone from deceiving us. This represents a significant shift for us.”

The chairman stated that the increase in Inland Gross Revenue is anticipated to finance essential infrastructure initiatives, as well as improvements in education and healthcare.

Regarding the significant increase in revenue, Governor Douye Diri stated, “This unparalleled rise in income allows us to enhance our investments in infrastructure, education, and health services. We are dedicated to making sure that all residents of Bayelsa reap the rewards of these improvements.”

Bayelsa’s success with e-ticketing is already being hailed as an example for other states grappling with low Internal Generated Revenue (IGR).

Eniekezimene emphasised the broader implications of the reform.

“What we’ve accomplished in Bayelsa demonstrates that technology is indeed the path ahead. States encountering comparable issues should explore e-ticketing as a means to enhance revenue collection and transparency,” he asserted.
