The Akwa Ibom State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association has issued an ultimatum to the University of Uyo’s administration, giving them until April 23 to resolve all matters related to the well-being of medical lecturers at the institution.

The organization cautioned that failing to act during the designated timeframe, they would be forced to initiate an open-ended strike to underscore their requirements.

Dr. Aniekan Peter, the state chairman of the association, addressed reporters at the Doctor’s Mess in Uyo. He mentioned that the decision to issue an ultimatum was made during the association’s emergency meeting which took place on March 31, 2025.

Peter, who read the communiqué from their urgent assembly, expressed disappointment that medical lecturers still hadn’t been transferred to the Unified Medical Pay Scale, as approved by the University of Uyo’s board of governors.

Following an urgent general assembly convened by our organization on March 31, 2025, addressing the well-being of medical educators at the University of Uyo, it was brought to light that certain medical lecturers have faced prolonged delays in their promotions along with corresponding losses in compensation. This situation has worsened during these challenging times for the nation and amidst the significant emigration of medical professionals.

The congress highlighted that there is an insufficient number of medical lecturers and officers at both the health center and the university. This situation has led to significant stress and an unjustified increase in workloads for our members.

Following these issues, the NMA Akwa Ibom State branch has decided that the university administration should transfer all medical practitioners serving as lecturers to the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure, consistent with the authorization from the University of Uyo Governing Council. The directive also calls for the prompt settlement of outstanding payments, similar to what is practiced in certain federal universities across Nigeria, according to the communiqué.

They further stated that “a 21-day deadline should be given to the administration of the University of Uyo to fulfill all the requirements.”

If those concerns are not addressed, the Nigerian Medical Association will initiate an open-ended strike without further notification to enforce its requirements.

Upon being reached out to, the head of information at the organization, Mr Udoro Udoekpo, was unable to provide a response but assured that he would bring the matter to the attention of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Nyauno Ndaeyo.

However, the phone lines for the vice-chancellor were unavailable when this report was filed.
