The individuals aboard an 18-seat bus from the Benue Transport Company were abducted during the latter part of Thursday evening. The people responsible for this act had also fired upon and fatally wounded both the driver and the passenger sitting upfront.

The bus departing from Makurdi, the state capital, was en route to Otukpo (located within the same state) when it encountered an ambush near Ikobi, just a short distance before reaching Otukpo town.

The Chairman of Otukpo Local Government, Maxwell Ogiri, who reported this incident to our correspondent on Friday, stated that five passengers were kidnapped, but one woman managed to escape.

Ogiri stated, “Indeed, the incident occurred on Thursday evening and it involved a Benue Links vehicle that had departed from Makurdi with the destination of Otukpo.”

The bus driver was killed by gunfire, and another passenger was injured. Meanwhile, the assailants abducted five people, however, a woman who had been kidnapped managed to escape today and is now providing details to the police in Otukpo.

However, the transportation firmโ€™s management released a statement on Friday evening, shared with reporters in Makurdi, confirming that the bus driver, named Samuel Agege, along with a passenger sitting upfront, died during the assault.

According to the statement made by the companyโ€™s information officer, Johnson Daniel, three passengers managed to flee from the captors’ hideout.

Regarding the liberation of the 14 kidnapped individuals, the spokesman for the Benue State Police Command, Catherine Anene, stated in an official release that the police worked alongside members of the Benue State Civil Protection Guard to successfully free the captives.

Anene verified that both the bus driver and a passenger succumbed to gunshot wounds.
