Perhaps what’s noteworthy is the increasing demand for pre-owned bras.

Certain women assert that their purchasing choices for bras depend on criteria like cost-effectiveness, longevity, and superior craftsmanship.

Many say they choose fairly used bras, popularly known as “Okrika,” because they are mostly available, affordable and durable.

In Lagos State, besides bustling marketplaces like Tejuosho, Balogun, and Katangowa, one can also discover budget-friendly bras at smaller markets, shops, and street vendors.

Mrs Peace Okeke

Also referred to as ‘Lady Bra’ by her clients in Festac Town, within the Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of the state, she mentions that she has been involved in this profession for over 18 years.

Okeke states that ever since she entered the industry, numerous customers have developed confidence in premium, top-tier secondhand bras.

Okeke, who deals with both vintage and brand-new bras, notes that high-quality second-hand bras are gaining popularity among consumers looking for cost-effectiveness, longevity, and comfort.

I’ve spent the last 18 years in this industry, and I’ve noticed shifts in what people prefer.

“Many individuals favor this option because first, it is sturdy and has a long lifespan when used. Second, it is economical and budget-friendly; anyone can afford it,” she stated.

She points out that premium imported bras from leading global brands often range from N15,000 to N50,000 each or even higher. However, second-hand bras of comparable quality can be found for as little as N5,000.

People purchase the latest models, yet an individual with modest means, particularly those facing financial constraints, can easily acquire second-hand bras for N5,000.

“You could also purchase three bras for the cost of a single new bra, and these will endure as long as you require them,” she clarifies.

Although many might be reluctant to purchase used bras, largely because of societal taboos or cleanliness worries, Okeke highlights the benefits of choosing pre-owned products.

She suggests that second-hand bras are a more economical option for people looking to save money.

The economic conditions in the nation are challenging. There are individuals who can manage expenses up to 15,000 or 20,000 naira.

I would suggest for those who can’t afford to: Rather than spending ₦15,000 on a single bra, you could use that ₦15,000 to purchase three quality bras.

“They will remain fresh for as long as you desire, unless you choose to update your underwear,” she remarked.

Regarding hygiene, Okeke suggests that thoroughly rinsing them with warm water and salt is the straightforward remedy.

She mentions that her clients haven’t brought up any concerns about cleanliness or infections, and adds that some apply the same sanitization technique they use for secondhand undergarments, which reportedly sell quite well.

“Even individuals use it for cleaning second-hand trousers and then wear them. It has no germs or diseases,” she states.

Also,

Mrs Aisha Lawal

A merchant from Orile Market states that the economic difficulties have compelled numerous women to look for affordable bras as a substitute.

“I offer both brand-new and gently worn bras, but the latter tend to sell more quickly. Many women opt for them as they find these slightly used options to be sturdier, more affordable, and long-lasting compared to the new ones,” she explains.

Lawal, who has spent over 15 years in the industry, notes that customers can find a high-quality second-hand bra for as little as ₦1,500 to ₦2,000, whereas a brand-new one with similar quality would typically cost ₦20,000 or more.

He mentions that the key attractions of second-hand bras are their resilience and cost-effectiveness.

Many modern bras tend to lose their elasticity and quality rapidly, particularly less expensive mass-produced models. In contrast, thrift store bras, frequently obtained from reliable sources such as the United Kingdom, are renowned for their durability.

Those with fuller figures, frequently ignored in typical shops, might discover a properly fitting and durable bra at thrift stores for a fair price.

Lawal recommends that purchasers should immerse their second-hand bras in hot water mixed with disinfectant prior to laundering them to eliminate bacteria.

Lawal points out, “The second-hand bras sourced from the UK and USA offer superior quality compared to inexpensive, brand-new alternatives.”

Once more, a concern individuals often share revolves around cleanliness and appropriate maintenance of pre-owned things, particularly undergarments.

According to

Mrs Olayemi Adebayo

She purchases second-hand bras of good quality because they are cheaper and often superior to brand-new ones.

Adebayo states that she hasn’t encountered any problems with cleanliness since she cleans it thoroughly prior to usage.

Mrs Tolu Adebiyi

A banker, nonetheless, states that besides quality, cleanliness and the perceived condition of second-hand items are significant factors she considers when purchasing undergarments.

I exclusively purchase new bras because I think underwear should be intimate and fresh. I am not at ease with using items that have been worn by others.

“I realize that gently worn bras are more budget-friendly, but I prefer to save up and purchase new ones,” she explains.

Remilekun Moses

A lingerie entrepreneur claims that thrifting trends won’t affect underwear brands in the marketplace.

“They hold their market position by providing more chic and alluring designs with premium materials,” she explains.

Moses, a digital marketer, points out that both local and international underwear brands are broadening their market presence by focusing on the middle and upper classes via social media platforms.

Thrift stores are evolving into more than just a passing fashion; they have become a way of life for numerous people.

More individuals are opting for pre-owned items, both as a way to cut costs and due to their tendency to be crafted from superior materials that endure over time.

To many people, thrift bras are now considered not just an inferior choice but a wise and pragmatic alternative that offers both high quality and cost-effectiveness.
