Watchdog Warns: Commerce Ministry Closely Monitoring Prices

The Commerce Ministry states that it is keeping an eye on product prices and implementing measures aimed at helping reduce living costs for Thais.

The Commerce Minister, Pichai Naripthaphan, instructed the Department of Internal Trade (DIT) along with all provincial commerce offices across the country to monitor rising prices and protect consumers against any unjust practices.

By March 25th, the ministry noted that numerous prices had remained steady. Egg production has increased due to improved weather conditions, leading to a farmgate price of 3.20 baht per mixed egg. The retail cost for grade No.3 eggs has decreased somewhat, as indicated by the ministry’s report.

In the poultry industry, stock levels are sufficient. At present, live chickens are being sold at farms for 40-41 Thai Baht per kilogram, whereas chicken cuts like thigh portions with bones go for approximately 78.81 Baht per kilogram and skinless breast pieces cost around 79.5 Baht per kilogram. This indicates a slight decrease compared to the previous month’s prices.

The national average cost for live pigs stands at 79.7 baht per kilogram, with stability anticipated as pig supply increases in the latter part of this year, according to the DIT.

A majority of fresh vegetables have kept their consistent pricing; however, certain products like Chinese kale, cabbage, Napa cabbage, yardlong beans, and uncooked papaya have experienced slight decreases in cost.

In the meantime, the costs of coriander and fingerroot have risen modestly as these crops approach the conclusion of their growing seasons.

Mr. Pichai mentioned that the ministry has initiated various programs designed to alleviate the financial strain on Thais.

The “Choojai Seniors 60+” program, active between January 30 and April 30, provides exclusive discounts for senior citizens across numerous provinces.

He stated that the plan aims to decrease living expenses by over 10 billion baht and boost the economy by up to 30 billion baht.

The “Back to School 2025” initiative provides eligible students participating in the third stage of the digital wallet program with the chance to buy educational supplies, attire, and information technology items at reduced prices.

Mr Pichai mentioned that the Mobile Blue Flag program along with Blue Flag events offer affordable consumer items across 50 venues in Bangkok and various provinces.

If customers encounter goods priced exorbitantly high, they have the option to lodge a complaint through the DIT hotlines at 1569 or notify their nearest provincial commerce bureau about the issue.
