This happens when travelers attempt to file a claim for sums less than their policy deductible, resulting in no compensation being issued.

Chris says: “Travel excess means the sum of money you commit to paying for any claim you submit.”

For instance, a traveler misplaced their passport and traveling papers, leading them to file a £50 claim.


The amount due for this claim is £75, so the claim cannot be processed.

The specialist points out that there are no additional coverage choices available and suggests evaluating what constitutes an “affordable” deductible prior to making a purchase.

He notes, ‘Some insurance companies provide coverage without an excess fee, although these options tend to be pricier.’

When obtaining coverage, ensure that you choose an excess amount that is both practical and manageable, since you wouldn’t want to end up receiving less compensation than anticipated.

A common error that often confuses many British people is neglecting additional coverage options when purchasing insurance.

This involves items such as phone cases or equipment used for winter sports, where some people believe they are protected under their insurance, yet they actually aren’t.

Chris states: “It’s advisable to create a list of all activities you plan to undertake during your trip and which will require coverage under an insurance policy before considering buying or searching for travel insurance.”

By doing this, you have a lower chance of being caught unprepared without the right protection.

A compliance specialist recommends reading the detailed terms carefully to understand which additional features you must include.

Travelers are also encountering issues due to date-related mistakes, causing some to travel beyond the allowed period.

This year has seen a reduction in these cases, although they continue to be the third most frequent problem.

Chris says, “It’s crucial to ensure accuracy in all details when purchasing insurance, but since it’s among the leading causes of claim denials, I advise travelers to pay special attention to their trip dates.”

The most effective method to prevent issues is to purchase insurance immediately after reserving your flights or transportation.

Thus, the dates and times remain prominent in your thoughts, while providing sufficient time for necessary adjustments.

At the same time, the specialist highlights hidden prior health issues as an additional factor frequently causing British individuals’ claims to be denied.

Chris explains the definition of the term: “Pre-existing medical conditions refer to any health issues, ailments, or injuries for which you have received a diagnosis prior to buying travel insurance.”

He encourages travelers to “disclose all health issues” they might have, as “it’s crucial for the insurance company to be able to offer proper treatment and coverage.”

Chris says: “Not disclosing information may lead to your application being denied, leaving you without reimbursement for several thousand pounds.”

Although managing conditions like diabetes may introduce some additional factors to consider during your travels, it shouldn’t stop you from discovering new places.
