The residents of Cashew Garden endured a painful day, situated behind the Federal Housing Authority within the Apo District.
An emergency unit focused on urban cleanliness, functioning under the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), took them off guard, coming to demolish their campsite amid intense rainfall on Tuesday.
Clearly puzzled, the occupants fled their temporary shelters upon hearing the noise of construction machines, desperately attempting to recover their belongings in the downpour.
The inclement weather failed to hinder the team’s operations, and the unauthorized encampment situated along a roadway was entirely removed.
Stephen Obiozor, head of the community, expressed sorrow over the abrupt action, which has not only resulted in numerous families losing their homes but has also affected their means of earning a living. “We stand at a critical point,” he stated.
Mukhtar Galadima, head of Development Control at the FCTA, stated that the cleanliness campaign follows up on the directive from FCT Minister Nyesom Wike aimed at removing lawbreakers and unlawful individuals from the city.
He mentioned that the region was initially intended for housing purposes, and although assignments were provided, the recipients did not complete development of their land within the specified period.
