The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) reports that agents from the Department of State Security along with officers from the Nigeria Police Force have apprehended individuals suspected of illegally obtaining National Identity Numbers (NIN) in Anambra State.
As the commission simultaneously cautioned Nigerians not to share their National Identity Numbers with unauthorized individuals in return for payment.
Dr. Kayode Adegoke, spokesperson for NIMC, released this caution in a statement on Wednesday.
This comes after reports that some Anambra residents have been handing over their NIN to unauthorized persons in return for cash.
In response, NIMC stated that these actions violate the NIMC Act No. 23 of 2007, as well as the Data Protection Act and the Cyber Crime Act.
The commission stated that those implicated in the incident have been apprehended by agents from the Department of State Security and the Nigeria Police Force.
Once they received details about the actions of these dishonest people, NIMC, together with the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), quickly apprehended those responsible for illegally gathering NINs.
They are presently undergoing interrogation and will encounter the full force of the legal system. Consequently, the commission recommends that Anambra State residents and all Nigerians refrain from providing their NINs to unauthorized persons, organizations, or platforms, since neither the federal government nor NIMC has granted permission for such actions. Those who violate these rules will face appropriate penalties.
At no point should individuals sharing National Identification Number (NIN) details provide them for financial gain. Doing so violates the regulations set forth by the Federation. Those who violate this rule will face appropriate consequences.
The Commission previously released a statement cautioning Nigerians not to share their NIN or personal information with anyone or through fake websites. This number should solely be utilized by individuals when accessing public or private sector services, and it needs to be authenticated.
“The Commission has implemented essential steps to restrict the actions of these dishonest individuals,” NIMC declared.
