“He mentioned, ‘Fingers crossed that you’ll discover a role where, even if you end up making poor films that flop at the box office, you can always return to this beloved character everyone adores,'” Jackson revealed in an interview.

“I have John McClane,” I thought, “Okay.” It wasn’t until I landed the Nick Fury role—and signed up for nine movies as Nick Fury—that it hit me: “Wow, I’m actually following through with what Bruce suggested. Now I’ve got this character.”

Jackson proceeded to star in a dozen Marvel films as Nick Fury, starting with “Iron Man” in 2008.

He went to portray Fury in
Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron

Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: Far From Home
and most recently, 2023’s
The Marvels.
The movies earned approximately $12.8 billion at the box office.

Jackson also
shared with the Los Angeles Times during a 2022 discussion
he showed no interest in being awarded for his efforts.

He stated, ‘I wasn’t ever going to allow the Oscars to define my achievements or shortcomings as an actor. For me, true success lies in being content.’

“Do I feel content with what I’m up to? I’m not aiming for roles in statuesque films,” he went on. “They say ‘Make this film, and you’ll get an Oscar.’ Not interested. Give me Nick Fury instead. Or better yet, playing Mace Windu wielding a lightsaber sounds like more fun.”

In the year 2000, Jackson once more collaborated with Willis.
