London [UK], March 28 (ANI): England’s top batsman Joe Root dismissed the possibility of taking up the role of white-ball captain for the national side, stating that “the ship has sailed” and he has “served his term” as a leader.
While addressing Sky Sports, as cited by Wisden, Root shared his thoughts. Although he hasn’t captained England in one-day cricket, Root took charge of the Test team for much of the period between 2017 and 2022. In total, he skippered England in 64 Tests, achieving 27 victories, suffering 26 losses, and drawing 11 matches.
Addressing Sky Sports, as reported by Wisden, Root stated, “I believe that chance has passed [leading England in one-day cricket]… I’ve had my stint captaining for England in an English jersey. However, I’m confident that anyone who gets this role will feel immensely honored and perform exceptionally well.”
After a disappointing performance in the ICC Champions Trophy, England’s top batsman Jos Buttler resigned from his position as captain due to consecutive underwhelming displays in various ICC white-ball tournaments since winning the T20 World Cup in 2022. In the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, England managed to secure only three victories out of nine games and barely reached the semi-finals in the T20 World Cup 2024, where the team struggled to defend their titles.
Following England’s victory in the 2019 World Cup, Root hasn’t been heavily involved in their one-day and Twenty20 teams, instead focusing more on Test cricket. Since then, he has taken part in only 34 out of 68 ODI games played by England, scoring 1,003 runs with an average of 34.58. During this period, he registered one century and eight half-centuries, reaching his highest score of 120. Additionally, Root last represented England in a T20 match back in 2019. However, he did play in the recent South AfricanTwenty20 league where he accumulated 279 runs across eight matches, averaging 55.80 and maintaining a strike rate of 140.20 along with three fifty-plus scores.
Regarding England’s unsuccessful ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign in Pakistan, where they failed to secure a single victory and lost all three matches, Root expressed his disappointment, stating that the team did not perform close to their potential.
“The team possesses immense talent and has even greater potential yet to be realized. This presents an excellent chance for them to regroup and progress collectively, aiming once more to reach the exceptional standards they have proven themselves capable of achieving—levels attained during their period between 2015 and 2019,” he stated.
