Retired Lt. Gen. Yohannes Issues Urgent Call for Action in Ethiopia’s Unrelenting Crisis

On March 29, 2025, Addis Ababa (ENA) reported—

The quest for obtaining a sustainable maritime access remains a significant and long-standing priority fueled by the increasing demands of Ethiopia’s youth, as stated by retired Lieutenant General Yohannes Gebremeskel to ENA.

As he stated, Ethiopia’s desire for a sustainable access to the sea has been around for numerous years.

Lieutenant General Yohannes further stated that the mission has accelerated due to the increasing populace and economic expansion within the nation. He underscored the significance of achieving this objective via nonviolent methods.

He said that this increasing demand cannot be halted without finding a solution.

The pursuit of access to the sea exists. However, it has intensified due to the rising demands of today’s youth. This trend cannot be halted; thus, these needs must be addressed. Consequently, as a country or community, we should explore every non-violent approach to accomplish this objective.

Lieutenant General Yohannes explained that Ethiopia’s pursuit of a secure access to the sea is indicative not just of the nation’s aspirations but also of its dedication to promoting regional collaboration and stability within the constantly changing global political environment.

He pointed out that fair distribution of coastal advantages promotes economic integration, sustainable peace, and stability in the area for the nations involved.

As a result, adjacent nations must cooperate and demonstrate their readiness to equally distribute their natural resources for the benefit of the area.

Furthermore, Lieutenant General Yohannes showed faith in Ethiopia’s ability to emerge as a key promoter of peace within the area, highlighting its significant contribution to maintaining regional tranquility and stability.

Nevertheless, considering its substantial population and vast territory, the country has not yet maximized its capabilities, he stated, emphasizing that the nation should harness its significant potential and emerge as a dominant peaceful power in the area.

Ethiopia holds significant potential to become a key regional mediator for peace within the area. With its substantial size, both territorially and demographically, Ethiopia possesses considerable influence. Nonetheless, realizing this potential will be crucial for maintaining enduring tranquility and stability throughout the region.
