Okupe Laid to Rest: Tears and Tributes Flow in Iperu

Dr. Doyin Okupe, who previously served as a spokesman for past presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, was laid to rest on Friday in Iperu, Remo, within Ogun State.

The Most Rev Adegbemi Adewale, the Archbishop of Egba-Yewa for the Methodist Church in Nigeria, has referred to Okupe’s passing as both a significant loss and a poignant reminder of life’s transient nature.

Adewale, concurrently serving as the Archbishop of RIYE, made these remarks during his address at the state funeral for the deceased political figure, which took place on Friday, at the Wesley Methodist Cathedral in Iperu Remo, Ogun State.

He stressed the importance of leading a life that respects God and serves humanity, urging both the congregation and the citizens of the state to utilize their abilities, moments, and endowments to positively influence the world surrounding them.

The Nigerian Red Cross distributes ₦304 million among 5,000 flood-affected individuals in Jigawa State. In Kano, police retrieve and return ₦4.85 million as ransom to a kidnapping victim. The federal government aims for consistent power supply to healthcare facilities across the country.

He stated that Okupe’s journey exemplified the principle that individuals in leadership positions and those who are wealthy ought to utilize their status to make a positive difference in the lives of others surrounding them.

Adewale observed that Dr. Okupe’s dedication to enhancing the well-being of his community and family was clear through his actions, remarking further that his influence will persistently motivate not only his offspring but also future generations.

During his speech, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun characterized the late Okupe’s existence and history as marked by significant contributions, toughness, and an unyielding devotion and dedication to Nigeria, his family, and his beliefs.

Governor Abiodun mentioned that the deceased was highly intelligent, compassionate, modest, and generous.

Observing that Okupe exhibited great cheerfulness, frequent smiles, and an exceptionally calm demeanor even under provocation, Governor Abiodun characterized him as a dignified individual and a champion of democratic values.

He was a media maestro, eloquent, and bold spokesperson. He was skilled in politics as a profession rather than being a career politician; he was an exceptionally trustworthy, dependable, and principled individual.

“He wouldn’t alter his perspective or stance merely due to external influences; only through genuine belief and internal conviction might he reconsider,” he stated.

The Governor stated that the late Okupe didn’t let his political views dictate his personal relationships, noting further that these beliefs never spoiled his connections with anyone, including himself, throughout his life.

Despite being an unwaveringly persistent politician, he kept his personal relationships separate from his politics. He might adopt a strong political position against you, yet this wouldn’t prevent them from maintaining a close friendship.

“Therefore, he distinguished between political matters and private interactions,” he stated.

Abiodun encouraged both the gathering and the residents of the state to lead lives marked by significance by adhering to the principle of treating others as one would wish to be treated themselves. He further noted that making an impactful difference isn’t confined solely to those who hold political office.

Among those attending the funeral ceremony were officials from the Ogun State Executive Council such as Arc. Yemisi Suswam, who was formerly the First Lady of Benue State; Hon. Kayode Amusan; Chief Alex Onabanjo; Senator Lekan Mustapha; Mr. Bayo Onananuga; Mr. Tunde Rahman; and Senator Gbenga Daniel, the ex-Governor of Ogun State, along with several others.
