The
Nintendo Switch 2
is surpassing the initial console considerably, as
Donkey Kong Bananza
debuts on the
US
sales charts.
Nintendo has
already confirmed
That the Nintendo Switch 2 has become the best-selling console of all time, having moved six million units globally, yet recent data has revealed just how significant its influence has been in the United States.
According to Mat Piscatella from Circana on Bluesky, the Switch 2 has sold over two million units in the U.S. since its release on June 5, 2025. To put this into perspective, the system moved 1.6 million units during its first month, indicating an additional 400,000 were sold in July—the slowest time of the year for video game sales, particularly for hardware.
As per Piscatella, the Switch 2 has achieved 75% of the unit sales rate established by the original Switch. To put this into perspective, the initial Switch sold 2.74 million units globally during its first month after release (via
CNBC
), so the Switch 2 has almost matched that figure within just one region.
It’s all the more remarkable when you consider that the Switch 2 was released in June, which is an uncommon period for launching a console, as video game sales typically slow down during this season, with most hardware purchases occurring before Christmas.
Switch 2’s massive sales contributed to an increase in hardware expenditure during July in the United States by 21% compared to last year, reaching $384 million (£285,450). This marks the largest hardware spending recorded for July since 2008, when it reached $441 million (£327,823).
Nevertheless, without considering the Switch 2, the outlook appears much more unfavorable. Dollar sales of
PlayStation 5
The hardware declined by 47% when compared to last year.
Xbox Series X/S
fell by 69%, whereas expenditure on the original Switch console decreased by 52%.
