Myanmar Earthquake Death Toll Climbs to 2,900; Rescue Efforts Continue in Thailand

Pakistan, April 2 – The death toll from the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that hit Myanmar on March 28 has climbed to 2,900, with authorities concerned it might exceed 3,000. Myanmar’s military chief, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, acknowledged this increasing fatality count. At least 4,521 individuals were reported injured due to the quake, and 441 others are still unaccounted for.

The earthquake led to extensive damage, affecting residential areas, historic pagodas, and contemporary structures alike. Those who survived now contend with critical deficits in essential supplies such as food, water, and housing. Medical facilities are overburdened, forcing numerous healthcare providers to attend to their patients outside because of space constraints indoors.

In Naypyidaw, rescue crews managed to extract a 63-year-old woman from the debris after 91 hours, despite diminishing expectations of locating additional survivors. The continuing civil unrest in Myanmar has complicated aid operations, as certain regions remain off-limits because of military-imposed limitations.

In the meantime, search operations persist in Thailand following the collapse of an incomplete skyscraper in Bangkok. The quake has claimed at least 20 lives in the country, and rescue crews are endeavoring to find those trapped beneath the rubble.
