Moroccan fresh onion exports have reached unprecedented heights after the removal of limitations in 2024. As per
EastFruit
Between June 2024 and May 2025, the nation exported 64,900 metric tonnes of onions valued at $238 million, representing a 4.8 times rise compared to the prior season and a 3% growth over the 2022/23 peak.
For many years, the export of onions from Morocco stayed under 10,000 tons before 2013. The volume increased gradually, reaching more than 20,000 tons during the 2013/14 season, surpassing 40,000 tons by 2018/19, and exceeding 60,000 tons for the first time in 2022/23. However, a restriction introduced by Morocco Foodex in February 2023, caused by increasing local prices, reduced exports to only 13,500 tons in the 2023/24 period. After the restrictions were removed in the summer of 2024, exports rebounded strongly and achieved an unprecedented peak.
During this current season, September witnessed the shipment of 14,200 tons, surpassing the entire amount from the prior year. High levels of activity between October and January contributed to the increase. Onions have become Morocco’s fourth-biggest vegetable export, following tomatoes, bell peppers, and carrots.
Morocco’s onions continue to be primarily sold in West Africa. Mauritania has seen its imports double, and Côte d’Ivoire has also raised its buying volume, whereas Mali and Senegal experienced significant drops. Outside of Africa, Morocco made progress in the Middle East, with the United Arab Emirates purchasing 5,500 tons, accounting for 8.5% of overall exports.
