The export of Moroccan potatoes increased significantly from July 2024 to May 2025, rising five times to reach 42,900 tons valued at 14.9 million dollars, as per trade statistics.
The number is 5.7 times greater compared to the prior season and 50 percent more than the 2022/23 figures, indicating a significant rebound following several years of decrease.
Although there has been a recovery, the quantities are still much lower than the 2018/19 high of almost 100,000 tons. Morocco’s position as a leading potato exporter dropped globally from 28th in 2019 to 67th in 2023, indicating the decline over recent years.
Scholars linked the increased activity to the removal of an export restriction targeting Western African markets in March 2023, which was later substituted with a more adaptable limit framework in February 2024.
Shipping has recently increased significantly to Mauritania and Mali, which currently make up approximately half of the total exports.
Spain continues to be the primary European purchaser, experiencing increased sales to France, Portugal, Ivory Coast, and Senegal, while seeing decreases in sales to the Netherlands, Burkina Faso, and Niger.
