Sri Lanka, August 27 – As part of an important move aimed at reinforcing Sri Lanka’s role as a key maritime center in the region, Maersk Line has entered into a three-year Terminal Service Agreement (TSA) with the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA). This deal is anticipated to boost commercial development, improve operational effectiveness, and create opportunities for deeper cooperation between the world-renowned shipping company and Sri Lanka’s leading port management body.
This collaboration allows Maersk Line to keep using SLPA facilities for its local activities, taking advantage of Colombo’s position along vital East-West maritime corridors. The TSA demonstrates Maersk’s trust in the high level of service and efficiency provided by SLPA, further establishing the Port of Colombo (POC) as an essential container transfer point in South Asia. Representatives from both parties noted that the deal will enhance service consistency and support sustained expansion through the planned construction of the Colombo East Container Terminal (CECT).
After becoming fully functional, CECT is anticipated to greatly boost capacity and efficiency, providing shipping companies such as Maersk with enhanced possibilities to expand their activities. Currently, the POC is fitted with CECT, CICT, and CWIT 1 to meet the requirements of Maersk’s large-scale vessels, ensuring consistent scheduling. This cooperation reflects the increasing confidence between SLPA and international shipping firms, establishing Colombo as a favored stopover in the area. Business experts believe this alliance will open up fresh opportunities for trade enhancement, employment growth, and greater competitiveness for Sri Lanka within the worldwide shipping industry.
