The shift towards clean energy in Kenya by 2030 is progressing as planned, according to Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi.
Wandayi stated that the government is dedicated to ensuring the nation becomes self-sufficient in energy to prevent an excessive dependence on imported electricity.
“We are completely dedicated to creating a supportive atmosphere for investors in the emerging green energy sector as a means to offer the public clean, cost-effective, dependable, and efficient power. In our opinion, this represents a consistent path toward transitioning the entire nation to green energy,” he stated.
The Cabinet Secretary stated that as a key facilitator for boosting national economic development and wealth, ensuring consistent energy supply was essential.
He mentioned that within his approach to boost investors’ faith in renewable energy, he has asked the National Assembly to look into removing the ban on Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) set for 2023.
While addressing Loiyangalani in Marsabit County, the CS made his first official trip to the Lake Turkana Wind Power (LTWP) project.
The CS acknowledged Lake Turkana Wind Power’s role in enhancing the stability of the country’s energy supply.
He stated that by contributing 12% to the national power grid, the initiative substantially enhances the reliability of the nation’s energy provision.
It is noteworthy that since commencing commercial activities in 2018, the company has supplied 9.5 billion kWh of renewable electricity to the national grid. This represents commendable progress. Furthermore, its average capacity factor stands at 54.7%, which many consider among the highest for wind farms globally. These achievements suggest a tangible path toward widespread sustainable energy use,” he noted.
At the event, LTWP CEO Max Schiff stated that the firm has achieved significant strides in enhancing the well-being of residents in Marsabit County.
He mentioned that 80% of its staff come from the local area.
“When a position opens up, we prioritize local candidates. This helps us build a strong, mutually beneficial work dynamic while also tackling the rising levels of joblessness in the area,” he explained.
The CEO stated that LTWP has contributed over Sh840 million to various Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives and events in the region.
“We have made investments in education, water, health, and various other themes, achieving remarkable outcomes. Our aim is to accomplish even greater things; however, our efforts will depend on available resources,” he stated.
He mentioned that the firm was also offering small but significant support to the nation via prompt tax payments and refunds.
He affirmed that we consistently and punctually fulfill our tax responsibilities and refunds, ensuring we never fall behind at any point.
