Governor Alia Inherits a Land Scarred by Dying Industries – International Edition (English)

MAKURDI

— The governor of Benue State, Reverend Father Hyacinth Alia, claims that his government took over numerous defunct enterprises throughout the region. He asserts that they have been working diligently to revive these establishments and create additional ones, all in pursuit of transforming Benue into a major economic force.

He further mentioned that previously flourishing factories and enterprises within the state have succumbed to “decades of disregard, inconsistent policies, and deteriorating infrastructure.”

During the inauguration of the Benue Innovators and Business Expo 2025 at IBB Square in Makurdi on Wednesday, Governor Alia revealed this information. She emphasized her administration’s dedication to transforming Benue into a leading economic force, inspired by the resolve of the state’s residents.

The Governor stated, “This occasion marks a significant step in our path toward revitalizing the economy, achieving autonomy, and fostering industrial development. Today is a time to honor the creativity, fortitude, and hard work of our citizens.”

As many of you might know, industrialization stands as the third priority in our government’s plan. Right from the start, we pledged to transform Benue State into a leading economic force by utilizing our abundant resources and the steadfast resolve of our people.

Nonetheless, we were left with a scene filled with stagnant industries. Formerly prosperous factories and enterprises fell victim to prolonged disregard, fluctuating policies, and deteriorating infrastructure.

Hence, he clarified that “Acknowledging the critical necessity for rejuvenation, our government via the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment has been diligently striving to infuse vitality into these stagnant sectors and create fresh enterprises. The primary objective extends beyond refurbishing current frameworks; it aims at establishing a robust base for enduring industrial expansion capable of withstanding future challenges.”

Given that every long journey starts with a single step, our administration has supported the Benue Investment and Property Company (BIPC). This company has pioneered the establishment of small-scale industries that are now manufacturing crucial products required by our community.

These initiatives are designed to utilize local assets, generate employment opportunities, and decrease reliance on foreign markets for products that we have the capability to manufacture domestically.

“Moreover, in partnership with the World Bank, our government launched the Nigeria COVID-19 Action Recovery and Economic Stimulus (NG-CARES) program. It has offered direct assistance to more than 5,000 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) throughout the region. This effort has aided these businesses in recovering financially, boosting their efficiency, and significantly contributing to our state’s economy,” he noted.

Previously, during her speech, the Minister for Industry, Trade, and Investment, Jumoke Oduwole, mentioned that the Federal Government was backing new rules aimed at fostering growth among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as well as bolstering investment aspects.

The minister highlighted that SMEs contribute 40 percent to the country’s GDP and play a crucial role in employment generation, accounting for 90 percent of jobs created. They emphasized that fostering entrepreneurship is essential as it forms the foundation of national development.

Oduwole stated that “the government is committed to establishing an conducive atmosphere for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to thrive. We will keep fostering and supporting ventures focused on exports.”

This exhibit serves as a call to action and support for creativity; I applaud the innovativeness of these inventors,” she remarked enthusiastically. “Let’s keep fostering economic growth and promoting progress.

In her speech as the Director-General of the Bureau of Entrepreneurship and Wealth Creation, Benita Shuluwa praised “the contributions of inventors, innovators, and entrepreneurs to wealth generation and industrial progress in Benue State.” She further emphasized that innovation, invention, and entrepreneurship serve as key drivers for sustainable growth, industrial revolution, and employment opportunities.

She highlighted that inventors, innovators, and entrepreneurs form the foundation for fostering economic growth, advancing technology, and expanding industries. She emphasized that the impact of these three elements on economic progress cannot be overstated.

She pointed out that in this aspect, the State Governor created the Bureau of Entrepreneurship and Wealth Creation within his office. This move complemented the reinforcement of existing ministries like Commerce, Trade and Industries along with Science, Technology, and Innovation.

Shuluwa believed that Benue would be an excellent place for industrial development. He contended that the region possesses specific attributes and opportunities conducive to both industry and prosperity, including sectors such as agriculture, sustainable power sources, information and communication technologies, production capabilities, natural resources, cultural heritage, and tourist attractions.
