The national organizer of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Joseph Yammin, claims that teams assigned to combat unlawful mining are misusing their roles to demand cash from honest and lawfully licensed miners.
As per Yammin, the special units have stepped away from their primary responsibility and are making the issue of unlawful mining worse. Consequently, he has urged President Mahama to swiftly dissolve all the task forces.
“I am informing the President of the Republic, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, that urgently, he must promptly halt all activities of these special units,” Yammin stated.
He claimed that the actions taken by the task forces do not qualify as efforts to combat unauthorized mining. Rather, he alleged that they were involved in demanding funds and causing further issues.
“The President must direct the IGP and the Interior Minister that whatever task force is involved should instantly stop all their activities,” he emphasized.
Mr. Yammin expressed these comments during a speech to a group of miners at an event recorded on camera. While this newspaper was unable to confirm the location and timing of the statement, the footage later became popular online, igniting intense discussion regarding the reliability of the government’s promise to stop illegal mining activities.
During his speech, Yammin raised doubts about the unusual way the task forces were functioning. “Do we not have officially registered miners within this nation?” he inquired, blaming the group for targeting authorized miners without valid reason.
Emphasizing additional shortcomings, he asked, “Where do these teams examine the paperwork of miners? Where do they confirm if an individual possesses a mining license?”
The head of the NDC national office emphasized that numerous important issues still lack clear answers regarding how the task force carries out its responsibilities, and urged a halt and reconsideration.
“That’s why I’m urging the President to stop all actions and allow us to come together to discover a permanent resolution to these issues,” he stated.
He claimed that some people were benefiting from the disorder, while the genuine effort to combat unlawful mining was still pending.
“Some individuals are earning substantial profits, while we still have not addressed the issue before us,” he expressed regretfully.
