The non-profit organization, Age Nigeria Foundation, has urged for fair access to healthcare services for elderly individuals throughout Lagos State.
During a courtesy visit to the Chairperson of the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area, Abdullahi Olowa, the President of the organization, Oluwayemisi Oluwole, issued this appeal. These details were included in a press release shared with The PUNCH newspaper on Wednesday.
Oluwole emphasized that the purpose of the visit was to raise awareness regarding the difficulties elderly individuals in Lagos State encounter when trying to achieve universal healthcare coverage.
She pointed out that Nigeria’s healthcare system lacks sufficient provisions for the increasing population of elderly individuals who are vulnerable to non-communicable diseases.
She said, “Ibeju-Lekki boasts one of the largest populations of elderly individuals residing in rural regions and difficult-to-access locations within Lagos State. Nonetheless, Nigeria’s healthcare infrastructure is still inadequately equipped to handle the challenges posed by an aging populace and related non-communicable diseases.”
Age Nigeria Foundation strives to advocate for changes in Nigeria’s healthcare system so that it caters specifically to the distinct requirements of the country’s elderly populace.
The ‘UHC Fit for an Ageing World’ campaign is a worldwide advocacy health project led by HelpAge International. This endeavor seeks to broaden the push for Universal Health Coverage to additional West African nations by the year 2030.
The statement indicated that during the reception of the delegation, the Ibeju-Lekki chairman highlighted the importance of offering healthcare support to elderly individuals.
He pledged to include elderly individuals in his region in the state’s comprehensive healthcare program.
Chairman Abdullahi Olowa, who greeted the delegation, recognized the significance of comprehensive healthcare for senior citizens.
He committed to backing specialized healthcare and assistance services aimed at elderly individuals within the Local Government Area.
“The chairman additionally committed to partnering with the Age Nigeria Foundation to enhance healthcare and social services for elderly individuals in Ibeju-Lekki. This would include providing these seniors with a monthly social pension as well as enrolling them in the Universal Health Insurance program of Lagos State,” the statement noted.
