Shops and merchandise valued in the multimillion-naira range were destroyed in a nighttime blaze that took place along the well-known Iweka Road, near Ochanja market in Onitsha, Anambra State.
Our reporter learned that the blaze began around 8:30 PM on Tuesday and devastated numerous stores, turning their merchandise and premises into ash.
Even though the origin of the fire remains unknown, it appears that the blaze burned fiercely for several minutes prior to the firefighters’ arrival, since many of the merchants had left their stalls.
On Wednesday, the Media and Publicity Unit of the Anambra State Fire Service, headed by the state’s fire chief, Chukwudi Chiketa, confirmed the occurrence of a fire incident. They stated they got an emergency call around 9:40 pm and promptly sent a team of firefighters along with their gear to handle the situation.
Chiketa stated, “The Anambra State Fire Service got an emergency call around 9:40 pm on Tuesday, March 25, regarding a severe fire incident occurring along Iweka Road near Ochanja Market in Onitsha.”
Right away, a team of firefighters along with their gear was dispatched to the location where the blaze broke out. They battled valiantly and managed to control the situation, preventing the fire from spreading further.
The incident impacted four stores within a two-story building, but numerous others were spared. The affected stores housed furnishings like leather, foam, and more.
