The Digital Bridge Institute (DBI) has successfully completed training for 49 individuals with disabilities (PWDs). These graduates have finished a nine-month information technology program designed to help close Nigeria’s digital gap.
The graduating class includes 24 individuals from DBI’s Lagos campus and 25 from its Kano campus. These students earned industry-recognized certifications along with crucial digital competencies aimed at boosting their involvement in the technology field.
The IT Bridge Academy, a program initiated by the federal government aimed at supporting individuals with disabilities (PWDs), offers tailored training to assist them in accessing opportunities within the contemporary digital sector.
This program was carried out in collaboration with Sightsavers International and stands as merely the second such effort on the African continent, following a comparable project in Kenya.
During the Lagos commencement event, David Daser, who serves as both the president and CEO of DBI, was represented by Viola Askia-Usoro, the institute’s chief for special tasks. She highlighted the program as a significant move toward achieving greater digital inclusivity.
This academy goes beyond education; it aims to create chances for people with disabilities to reach their fullest potential,” he emphasized, underscoring the program’s importance in addressing stigma, discrimination, and restricted access to training.
Daser encouraged the graduates to champion digital accessibility and appealed to both public and private sector entities to back inclusive programs that help people with disabilities thrive in Nigeria’s technological landscape.
On behalf of his fellow graduates from cohort 2 as the class governor, Amos Adegboyega recognized the difficulties they encountered throughout the program and conveyed their appreciation for the assistance provided. He stated, “Within disabilities lie remarkable capabilities, and this training has instilled in us the assurance needed to realize our aspirations.”
