FG Proposes Extending NYSC by One Year

The federal government has suggested a major alteration to the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) program, as Minister of Education Olatunji Alausa has advocated for extending the duration of the initiative from twelve months to twenty-four months.

On Friday, Alausa proposed this idea when Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, the Director-General of NYSC, paid him a courtesy visit at his office in Abuja.

As stated on the NYSC’s official Facebook page, “The minister proposed extending the national service period from one year to two years. He also suggested expanding the scope of the NYSC Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development Training program offered to volunteers.”

He further suggested sending additional graduate teachers to rural educational institutions, emphasizing that this move would aid in tackling the scarcity of personnel in less-serviced regions.

The minister praised the NYSC leadership for their forward-thinking digital changes in the mobilization procedures, particularly initiatives focused on preventing certificate fraud amongst Western African graduates educated abroad.

In relation to Oladunjoye’s passing, ASELGON laments the significant loss to political activism—Salako mourns Oladunjoye, calling his death shocking. Speakers Abbas and Kalu denounce the Plateau massacre.

Alausa additionally commended the initiative for addressing the longstanding problem faced by OND part-time graduates with full-time HND degrees who were formerly excluded from employment services.

He disclosed that the Ministry is striving to digitalize the process of verifying credentials for overseas-educated Nigerians, emphasizing that the partnership between the Ministry and NYSC will be strengthened to enhance advancements in the educational field for national progress.

“You’ve excelled tremendously as an organization. The NYSC should provide individuals with greater chances to become job creators who can address the nation’s requirements,” he stated.

This comes just a few days after the federal government started disbursing payments of N77,000 to national service corps members.
