Dhaka, April 3 — A female reporter from the English-language newspaper New Age and her brother faced an attack when they confronted a group of young people who had reportedly been stalking her near their residence in the Banasree district of the city on Wednesday.
Upon receiving information about the incident, a police unit was dispatched to the location, as Sub-Inspector Anisur Rahman, who was on duty at the Rampur Police Station, reported to UNB.
He mentioned that so far, no arrests have been made.
The journalist Rafia Tamanana, who worked as an editorial assistant at New Age, recounted the event in a Facebook update.
“About three to four young individuals came out of the store, approached me, and positioned themselves beside me. My brother tried to step in, but they attacked him and started hitting him,” she recounted.
Rafia also said that she was attacked and beaten by the group when she tried to protect her brother.
“The people nearby simply observed the incident as bystanders, and nobody offered assistance. The assailants also summoned more individuals to join them in forming a crowd,” she said additionally.
Rafia shared that both she and her brother ran away from the situation to avoid additional danger. She pondered, “Isn’t my neighborhood supposed to be safe for me?”
Later, the authorities were informed, and Rafia was transported to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. She stated that she intended to lodge an official complaint once she had received medical care.
A law enforcement unit was examining the surveillance videos from the vicinity, whereas another group was assisting the person who had been affected. Authorities stated that measures would be implemented following the submission of a formal complaint.
