Experts Reject Claims of New Measles Strain in Morocco

Health professionals calmed the public by stating that there is no newly emerged strain of the measles virus in Morocco, even though worries arose after European case reports were connected to genetic types originating from the nation.

Dr. Tayeb Hamdi, a health policy analyst, explained that the measles virus remains stable and consists of 24 internationally acknowledged genetic variants, with none showing mutations capable of impacting vaccine efficacy.

“The measles virus comprises 24 genetically distinct strains acknowledged internationally, and these variants are constantly tracked using genomic sequencing methods,” he stated to LFHCK IDAR.

Dr. Hamdi stressed that the idea of a new strain exclusive to Morocco or any other nation has no foundation.

“This doesn’t imply that a new variant particular to Morocco or any other country has emerged,” he stated.

“The measles virus doesn’t mutate in ways that affect its immune properties or diminish the efficacy of vaccines.” He further pointed out that the World Health Organization (WHO) suggests conducting genetic assessments of identified instances to track the spread of the virus; however, the virus stays consistent over time.

Dr. Said Afif, a pediatrician and part of the scientific committee for COVID-19 vaccinations, likewise tackled these worries, asserting that the measles vaccine, having been utilized for more than four decades, is proven to be both secure and efficient.

Dr. Afif emphasized, “The vaccine being used against this illness is the very same one that has been around for more than four decades, and it remains both safe and effective.”

Experts commended Morocco for its continuous vaccination initiatives, noting that these programs have led to a notable reduction in measles incidents.

Dr. Afif highlighted that the nation had efficiently audited more than 11 million health documents, guaranteeing that 90% of kids who were not previously immunized against measles got their shots.

He highlighted the significance of sustaining these initiatives: “Continuing vaccination drives is essential to avoid epidemics and uphold community well-being.”
