European Talents Shine at George Enescu Festival 2025: Lumières d’Europe Residency

The George Enescu International Festival in Romania will feature Lumières d’Europe, an esteemed musical residency headed by violinist David Grimal, in collaboration with the National University of Music Bucharest. This event, scheduled from September 1st through September 10th, will delve into the theme “Resilience and Liberty.”

Fifteen talented young musicians from various parts of Europe have been chosen to collaborate with esteemed artists like pianist Itamar Golan, violinist David Grimal, violist Natasha Tchichkine, cellist Leonid Gorokhov, and composer-in-residence Cesar Viana. The musical pieces they will perform encompass compositions by influential creators who drew inspiration from concepts of defiance and liberty, featuring works by Enescu, Shostakovich, Pártos, Schnittke, Silvestrov, Schulhoff, Veress, and Weinberg. Additionally, Viana plans to debut his own new piece during this event.

Philosopher Paul Audi along with political essayist Nicolas Tenzer are scheduled to conduct conferences throughout the residency, thereby infusing an interdisciplinary element into the program.

The concluding part of the event will feature public concerts where young musicians will perform together with their mentors at the National University of Music Bucharest. Admission will be free of charge.

The application period for the 2025 residency is open till May 31, and more information can be found on the project’s official site.

The George Enescu Festival in 2025, taking place between August 24 and September 21, will commemorate 70 years since the composer’s death through an impressive lineup of over 95 performances showcasing more than 4,000 internationally renowned musicians.
