Addis Ababa, April 2, 2025 (ENA) — Over the last eight months, the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) has provided more than 264 billion Birr in loans to clients, as stated by the bank’s president, Abe Sano.
When presenting the bank’s eight-month performance report to the House of Peoples’ Representatives’ Standing Committee on Public Enterprises, President Abe Sano emphasized the organization’s initiatives to broaden access to loans and improve financial inclusivity.
He mentioned that the bank is launching new loan offerings to support this growth. In the past eight months, the CBE granted 264.65 billion Birr in loans, with 88.2 percent of this sum allocated to the private sector. Overall, the total disbursed loans have amounted to 1.39 trillion Birr.
In an effort to enhance access to loans, the bank has joined forces with Ethiotelecom to offer digital lending solutions.
The president stated that over 3.9 billion Birr worth of loans have been distributed via digital channels during the last eight months, supporting approximately 717,000 clients up until February 28, 2025.
To back entrepreneurial ventures, the bank has prepared to offer loan services to burgeoning start-ups as well.
Moreover, the preparations to enhance digital loan accessibility for the general public have been finalized, and the system is now undergoing tests, as gathered from the bank’s information.
