BYD’s Lightning-Fast, Budget-Beating Electric Vehicle: Now Even More Affordable

The BYD Han L sedan leaves all other electric vehicles behind in terms of charging capabilities, yet it remains more affordable than a Tesla Model 3.

BYD stunned the electric vehicle sector with its announcement of megawatt-level charging for forthcoming cars.
While electric vehicles in the U.S. market have a maximum charging capacity of about 350 to 400 kilowatts, BYD stated that their new models will be capable of charging at more than twice this rate, allowing for much faster refueling times.

Now, BYD has revealed the pricing, and surprisingly, it’s even more affordable than originally anticipated.

The world’s largest EV maker says its Han L sedan will start at 209,800 yuan, equivalent to $28,544 at today’s exchange rates. That’s way lower than the originally announced starting price of 270,000 yuan ($36,737). While you can’t just convert the price to get a full picture—as tax differences, purchasing power parity differences and plenty of other caveats apply—the new price is still an extraordinary value. A

The Han L sedan is available in three versions, with the highest trim priced at 279,800 yuan ($37,935). This places the premium model of this stylish, upscale sedan approximately $12,000 below the typical vehicle price in the United States.

The official range estimates span from 373 miles (601 kilometers) to 436 miles (701 kilometers). However, this is based on China’s more favorable CLTC testing cycle. In real-world conditions, the actual range may be lower. But thanks to megawatt charging, this isn’t a significant concern. BYD acknowledges that most standard chargers cannot fully utilize the “Super E” platform’s maximum charging potential, which is why they have incorporated dual charging ports for faster refueling simultaneously. This setup allows you to connect two 500-kW chargers at once.

BYD is developing an SUV based on the same 1,000-volt Super E platform as the Tang L. This mid-size crossover shares comparable specifications with the Han L. The pricing for this model ranges from 229,800 yuan ($31,268) to 289,800 yuan ($39,432). For such a luxurious SUV capable of consuming enough power to match a small town’s usage during a quick stop, this offers quite a steal of a deal.

It is evident that swift-charging, budget-friendly electric vehicles are achievable. China has demonstrated this, but so have others.
