A bridegroom succumbed to his wounds following an incident where he was struck by festive bullets during his wedding ceremony in northern Turkey, according to local news outlets reporting on Wednesday.
While the new couple was being taken home following the wedding, the 23-year-old bridegroom, named Ali K, was shot, according to reports from the state-run news outlet Anadolu, which alleged that his sister-in-law was responsible.
A 47-year-old woman was taken into custody by authorities, with two illegal handguns discovered in her yard, according to reports.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the location in Turpçu Village, within the Şebinkarahisar region. The bridegroom, who had sustained severe injuries, was transported to Şebinkarahisar State Hospital.
However, regardless of all attempts, he couldn’t be rescued. Prosecutors have initiated an inquiry regarding the event.
Fireworks during celebrations are typical at wedding events in the northern Black Sea area of Turkey.
Last week, a man lost his life and two more individuals were injured due to festive shooting ahead of a wedding in the eastern Trabzon region.
The ceremony was called off, and two individuals, including a law enforcement official, were taken into custody regarding the event, according to local news outlets.
In 2018, a physician passed away following an accidental gunshot wound to his head during a wedding event in Turkey when he was examining a malfunctioning firearm.
Hasan Akdemir, aged 39, was firing a pistol into the sky with festive shots at an event close to the central Turkish city of Konya.
However, the weapon did not fire properly, and Dr Akdemir stopped to check why the gun was not working.
A gunshot erupted from his hand, and Dr. Akdemir, a general practitioner, accidentally shot himself in the head.
Law enforcement initiated an inquiry regarding the event amid initial accounts suggesting the firearm failed to fire properly.
Witnesses reported that Dr. Akdemir took the gun from his waistband and began shooting into the sky at the wedding held in the town of Kozagac near the city.
When it did not fire properly, he held it up to check it, which is when witnesses say he ended up shooting himself in the head.
An ambulance was called to rush him to the Atasehir State Hospital, but despite doctors’ best efforts, he could not be saved.
Konya is Turkey’s seventh largest city, featuring a dynamic economy that has placed it among the nation’s “boom towns.”
