Bangladesh Urges BIMSTEC Nations to Speed Up 6 Key Agreement Finalization

Dhaka, April 2 — On Wednesday, Bangladesh called upon the member states of BIMSTEC to provide complete assistance in order to finalize the six key agreements without delay.

Herein lie provisions concerning traded merchandise under the framework accord for the BIMSTEC Free Trade Area, including Rules of Origin, cooperation in customs affairs, dispute resolution protocols, measures to enhance trade facilitation, investment opportunities, and commerce in services. As stated by Bangladesh, achieving this Free Trade Agreement is crucial for fostering joint economic progress across the area.

The 25th session of the BIMSTEC Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM) commenced in Bangkok, Thailand, ahead of the 6th BIMSTEC Summit scheduled for April 4.

Dhaka views the BIMSTEC Summit as an occasion to showcase a “fair and equitable” Bangladesh within South and Southeast Asia.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that a Bangladeshi delegation consisting of five members, headed by Foreign SecretaryMd Jashim Uddin, took part in the Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM).

The Foreign Secretary gave an update on the advancement of the sector named ‘Trade, Investment and Development including Blue Economy,’ with Bangladesh taking the lead role in this initiative.
