African Producer Wins $1,000 Grant in Handle It Africa Awards

Excitement

There was an exciting atmosphere at the British Council building in Ikoyi, Lagos, on March 28, 2025, as(Handle It Africa), together with the British Council Nigeria, advanced their mission of supporting women in the creative sector during the yearly She Creates 2025 gathering.

One of the main highlights of the event was an unexpected pitch contest. In this contest, film producer and innovative business owner, Temi-Ami Williams, took home a $1,000 grant for being the top contender.

The opening address was delivered powerfully by Adejoke Adedapo, who underscored Handle It Africa’s dedication to building inclusive creative environments.

She stated, “Our purpose is to guarantee that women and every creator have access to the necessary tools, resources, and networks to expand their skills.”

Brenda Fashugba, who leads the Arts department at the British Council, recognized the advancements women have achieved within the field yet highlighted the ongoing difficulties they encounter when trying to obtain essential support and resources.

A conversation held around a fireplace, led by Tope Sanni, included a prominent group of industry experts such as Yolanda Okereke, Nora Awolowo, Ify Mogekwu, and Adetutu Laditan.

The conversation centered around women claiming ownership of their creative environments, overcoming obstacles, and reshaping professional standards.

Donna McGowan, the Country Director of British Council Nigeria, surprised everyone with an impromptu announcement for a live pitching contest. The participants were unprepared and had mere moments to develop and present their ideas.

The victor was decided through a real-time poll conducted by fellow artists, resulting in Temi-Ami Williams receiving the $1,000 grant supported by Handle It Africa.

Overwhelmed with happiness, Williams exclaimed, “I was completely unaware of the pitch session, yet I understood that I needed to put forth my utmost effort. Securing this grant holds great significance for the narrative I wish to share next. I am profoundly thankful to Handle It Africa and the British Council for their faith in aspiring artists such as myself.”

Looking back at the event’s success, Olufemi Oguntamu, the founder of Handle It Africa, highlighted that She Creates 2025 was merely the start.

It’s astounding to witness the enthusiasm and partnerships that have emerged from this assembly. Their influence extends beyond this event; every woman present will significantly mold the creative sector. Our dedication continues towards backing platforms and communities that foster creator success.
