On Saturday, a multi-vehicle collision occurred on the Kaplong-Kericho highway resulting in at least 15 fatalities. According to Bomet County’s Traffic Enforcement Officer Amos Namasaka, another 14 individuals suffered injuries. Upon inspection, it was found that six injured persons were being treated at St Clare’s Kaplong Hospital, five at Tenwek Hospital, and three at Litein AIC Hospital.
“A combined total of 15 lives have been lost; meanwhile, fourteen more received hospitalization across several facilities within the region. All three affected vehicles ended up as twisted wreckage following this unfortunate event,” stated Mr. Namasaka. He further mentioned that an investigation has commenced to ascertain what led to the tragic occurrence.
The accident took place near Cheptanguge village in Daraja Sita area—between Kaplong and Kapkatet trading centers—and entailed a truck loaded with sand, a minibus carrying 14 passengers operated by Member Travelers SACCO, and a private sedan. While both the minivan and the personal vehicle traveled towards Bomet city from Kericho town, the freight carrier aimed toward Kapkatet township located inside Kericho district boundaries.
Witness accounts suggest that during overtaking maneuvers, the small family car crashed frontally into the approaching heavy goods transport unit. Following these events, all deceased parties’ remains were transported to Kapkatet Subcounty Health Facility situated in Kericho province where they remain preserved pending identification procedures.
